Postgraduate Member
Did you know that residents and fellows pay NO membership dues, and post-resident members pay REDUCED dues for the first 4 years they are in practice!
A Postgraduate Member is defined as a DPM who is serving as a resident or fellow; who is a full-time postgraduate student, or a graduate who, during the first year following graduation, has not entered into practice or been admitted to a residency program.
Postgraduate Member categories are broken out into sub-categories: Resident/Fellow, No Residency, Postgraduate, and Non-Practicing Resident:
Resident/Fellow Member
Resident membership can last from one to four years, depending on the length of the program. Fellow membership lasts for one year.
Postgraduate Member
Postgraduate membership is made available to any DPM who has re-entered school as a full-time student. The DPM can study any subject. For example, members may be studying law but want to maintain APMA membership.
Written confirmation from the school indicating that the student is in a full-time program and confirming the length of the program is required.
Non-Practicing Resident
A DPM who has completed a residency, fellowship, or postgraduate studies and who has not entered practice or podiatric employment may maintain membership within this category for a maximum period of one APMA fiscal year, or until she enters practice, podiatric employment, or enters another residency program, whichever is earlier.

* A break in service (consecutive years) occurs when a member allows his/her membership to lapse and rejoins at a later date but does not reinstate his/her membership back to the original membership lapse date. Any break in service may affect their future chances for Senior and Life Member categories. For example, members applying for Senior and Life Membership must have a minimum of 15 years of consecutive membership. EXAMPLE: Dr. Smith was a member from June 1, 1984, to November 1, 1992, when he resigned his membership. On June 1, 1994, Dr. Smith indicates an interest in rejoining, but is not concerned with his break in service. When he rejoins on June 1, 1994, he will show a break in service from November 1, 1992, to May 31, 1994.
The only way to mend a break in service is to pay dues for the period of time that the DPM was not a member at the time of rejoining. In this case, Dr. Smith was not a member for a period of approximately one and a half years. Dr. Smith may want to mend his membership, as he already has approximately nine consecutive years of membership. By mending, Dr. Smith will amend his record to reflect no break in service and reflect continuous membership starting on June 1, 1984. This will be a total of approximately 10 and one-half years. If he mends his membership he could be eligible for Senior or Life Membership in another four and a half years.
Non-Practicing Member (NPM)
(NPM) A DPM who has not been engaged in practice or in the dispensing of podiatric medical services for a minimum of 1 year due to taking care of a family member who is ill, raising a family, etc. The DPM must not have had his/her license revoked for any reason. Annual dues $543.50. If you would like to DOWNLOAD an application, please click here.
Applications can be faxed to 646-672-9344; emailed to Rashmi Doshi at rdoshi@nyspma.org ; or mailed to NYSPMA, Attn: Rashmi Doshi, 330 West 38 th Street, Suite 1105, New York, NY 10018

Disabled Member (PDM)
A DPM who is disabled and for whom the payment of full dues would constitute a hardship, may be classified as a disabled member. “Disabled” shall mean total disability that continuously prevents the member from carrying out substantial and material professional duties; such member must be under the regular care of a physician (other than himself) and may not derive any income or profit from any activity as a podiatrist. A member classified as “disabled” shall not be eligible for any other category of membership. Disability membership shall be revoked if the member's disability has terminated and he or she is able to resume activities as a podiatrist. A current member must be in good standing (dues and assessments for the current quarter have been paid). Annual dues $230. If you would like to DOWNLOAD an application, please click Here.
Applications can be faxed to 646-672-9344; emailed to Rashmi Doshi at rdoshi@nyspma.org; or mailed to NYSPMA, Attn: Rashmi Doshi, 330 West 38th Street, Suite 1105, New York, NY 10018

5.4 Status Member
(5.4) DPM who is a current NYSPMA member in good standing (dues and assessments for the current quarter have been paid), for whom the payment of dues would constitute a hardship due to a temporary physical disability, illness, or other reasons as investigated and set forth by the NYSPMA. This category allows the member to be excused from payment of dues (all or a portion), for the current fiscal year. A non-member cannot join with 5.4 status and an inactive member cannot be reinstated as a 5.4 Status Member. 5.4 status cannot be backdated to previous fiscal years; it can only apply to the current fiscal year.
If you would like to apply for 5.4 membership, please contact Rashmi Doshi at rdoshi@nyspma.org or call the office at (212) 996-4400.
