The Young Member's Institute (YMI) is NY27's dedicated day of programming for residents, fellows, students, and early-career podiatrists.

The Complications Seminar for Residents gives residency programs from the Tri-State area and beyond a platform to present their most challenging surgical, medical, and diagnostic cases — and to get real-time input from peers, moderators, and a panel of judges. Each program's case is distilled into a focused 10-minute presentation, followed by open academic and risk-management discussion, with awards presented for the top three programs. All conference attendees are welcome to sit in and watch the residents present.

Beyond the Seminar, the Institute provides residents with important guidance as they transition out of residency, including board certification insight, research opportunities, and risk management considerations.

Residency Directors and Assistant Directors are welcome to attend and support their residents, and current students are given a special invitation to attend as observers.

Complications Seminar for Residents

PROPOSALS FOR PRESENTATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED HERE BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2026.

The Foundation for Podiatric Medicine is pleased to announce that we will be hosting a Complications Seminar from 8:00am-5:30pm on Saturday, January 23 as part of the 2027 New York Clinical Conference. Past year’s Complications Seminar have been greeted with tremendous enthusiasm and serves as an opportunity to highlight the great training our students, residents and fellows receive. Take part in this annual interactive program as local residency programs present their complications and how they are treated. Plus, take advantage of the opportunity to give programs your insight on how to resolve their complications. Residents from the Tri-State area and beyond are invited to present on any type of complication from surgical, medical or diagnostic issues. Open discussion and questions will be encouraged. The audience may also bring complications that can be discussed as a group for treatment consensus or opinions. Residency Directors and/or Assistant Directors are encouraged to attend and participate. All Residency Directors/Assistant Directors must be registered for NY27 in order to attend the Complications Seminar.

GROUND RULES

  1. Residents may present a case complication via PowerPoint in one of three topics: Surgical, Medical, or Diagnostic. Topic must be a podiatric complication.
  2. Each residency program is limited to ONE case presentation. The management of this case should be consolidated to a 10-minute presentation.
  3. A diagnostic dilemma should be identified in each case. 
  4. Cases with some follow-ups are encouraged, as they will foster a richer discussion.
  5. Discussion will occur from both an academic perspective and risk management perspective based on the types of cases presented. Discussion will be split into 10–15-minute sessions following several case presentations. Case presentations will be arranged into blocks to allow for an appropriate amount of time for discussion following the case presentations. 
  6. Residency Directors of submitting programs must be members of NYSPMA/APMA in order for programs to participate.

Proposals should include the title of your presentation, a brief synopsis (500 words or less), name(s) and residency years of resident(s) presenting, name of residency program, and name of residency director. PROPOSALS FOR PRESENTATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED HERE BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2026. The Seminar will be open to all conference attendees, with a special invitation extended to current students. It is recommended that one representative from each program be present for the entirety of the case presentations out of respect for all programs presenting. Awards will be presented for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place programs and will be judged by a panel of selected judges. Sleeping rooms will be provided on either Friday, 1/22 or Saturday, 1/23 at the NY Marriott Marquis by The Foundation for Podiatric Medicine to the presenters of the first five eligible cases submitted.
