ODM Releases New Intravenous Therapy Resources for Nursing Facilities

The Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) has published two new resources: a fact sheet on intravenous (IV) therapy services in nursing facilities and guidance on state requirements for their use. The materials address the growing presence of retail IV therapy clinics and outline standards for medical necessity, appropriate staffing, and compliance with Ohio’s drug compounding and scope-of-practice rules.

ODM notes that custom IV hydration and micronutrient infusions are generally considered experimental, clinically unproven, and in most cases medically unnecessary. Covered alternatives include standard IV fluids for dehydration, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) or enteral supports, and FDA-approved vitamins or trace elements administered orally or by injection when appropriate.

Both resources are available on ODM’s Nursing Facility Resources page.
